3 Signs Your Industrial Torque Converter Needs A Service
When an industrial torque converter is malfunctioning, the signs will become obvious quickly. Here are three signs that there’s problem that your industrial torque converter needs servicing.
1. Overheating
As with any machine, overheating is a notable sign that your industrial torque converter needs maintenance. Torque converter problems will often appear to be transmission issues, but problems with the transmission are more often the effect and not the cause.
A common failing from an industrial torque converter is bad seals or some other leak that robs the engine or transmission of necessary power. Checking the seals for an obvious leak would be the first step to take, but this should only be attempted by those familiar with industrial equipment and able to do so in a safe way.
If you are able, check the fluid pressure. Any drop in pressure can cause the transmission of an industrial torque converter to run hot. Low fluid levels can often cause overheating. Before replacing the converter itself, check for leaks, as this is a common problem with a relatively easy fix.
2. Dirty Liquid
Another clear sign that an industrial torque converter isn’t running well is dirty fluid or liquid. Dirty oil will be murky or thick.
Torque fluid is also known as hydraulic fluid, and the viscosity (or thickness) of the fluid needs to be right. If torque fluid becomes too thick or viscous, it can cause overheating, slips, or other problems. Do not attempt to change your own fluid if you are unfamiliar with the process or the equipment.
3. Slipping / Shuddering
Slipping, shuddering, or heavy knocking are all signs that your converter may need service. If the fluid levels are adequate, the unit isn’t overheating, and there aren’t apparent leaks, you may need to contact a service professional.
If the engine is running powerfully and the fluid levels and pressure are good, you could have a clutch problem. The clutch assembly could be failing to transfer power from the engine to the converter, leading to poor performance.
